Transmission coolers are universal items and this one will fit your 1997 Ford Explorer XLT. The transmission from the factory is set up with a small cooler in the engine cooling system. As far as transmission coolers go, you cannot cool transmission fluid too much, so installing the largest cooler that the space on your 2011 Dodge Nitro will allow is perfectly fine and will benefit your transmission the most. The only way to prevent the possibility of the vehicle's transmission fluid mixing with the vehicle's radiator fluid would involve routing the transmission fluid away from the radiator to an aftermarket cooler.
